This test is an essential step in diagnosing internet connection problems, helping you determine whether the issue lies with your WiFi, the router, or the service provided by your ISP. Running a speed test helps you determine whether your internet connection is performing as expected. By comparing the results to your internet plan’s advertised speeds, you can identify if there are any slowdowns or issues with your connection.
Instructions:
1. Open a Web Browser
- Launch a web browser on your computer, smartphone, or tablet.
2. Visit a Speed-Testing Website
- Navigate to a reputable speed test site such as speedtest.net, fast.com, or your internet service provider's speed test page.
3. Run the Speed Test
- Once the website loads, click on the “Go” or “Start” button to begin the test.
- The test will measure your download speed, upload speed, and ping (latency). It usually takes less than a minute to complete.
4. Compare the Results
- After the test finishes, compare the results to the speeds advertised by your internet plan. For example:
- Download speed: Measures how quickly data is transferred from the internet to your device.
- Upload speed: Measures how fast your device sends data to the internet.
- Ping (latency): Indicates the delay between your device and the server, usually measured in milliseconds (ms).
- If the speeds are significantly lower than expected, further troubleshooting may be needed.
5. Test Both WiFi and Wired (Ethernet) Connections
- WiFi: Run the test using a WiFi connection first.
- Ethernet: If possible, connect your computer directly to the router using an Ethernet cable and run the test again.
- Comparing these two results helps determine if the issue is with your WiFi network or the overall internet connection.
What to Do Next:
- If the speed test results match your internet plan’s advertised speeds but you still experience slow connections, there may be network congestion or device-specific issues.
- If the results are significantly lower than expected, contact HGC's IT department or contact your ISP for further assistance.
